Synopsys ships a chip design toolkit for the new CXL 4.0 (Compute Express Link) interconnect. Four bundled 16 lane links now exceed 2 TB/s.
CXL is the open standard that lets processors, accelerators, and memory pool their resources across chip and rack boundaries, the way USB standardized how devices talk to a PC. CXL 4.0, finalized in late 2025, doubled per-port bandwidth to 128 GT/s and broke the 16-lane-per-port cap that PCIe and earlier CXL generations had shared. The number that matters is the bundled-port math: four x16 links now exceed 2 TB/s; eight x16 links exceed 4 TB/s (EE Times).
Synopsys has released a CXL 4.0 IP portfolio that bundles the controller, an IDE security module, a silicon-proven PHY, and verification IP into one stack spanning CXL 4.0 and earlier generations. Chip designers can now build 4.0 silicon without stitching the pieces together. The spec also extends signal reach with up to four retimers, adds native x2 link widths, and uses a 256-byte latency-optimized flit to raise payload efficiency.
The pressure on memory and cache is not new. Ron Loman, a Synopsys technologist, traces it back to 2012; LLM training, recommendation systems, and other memory-intensive workloads now exceed single-SoC capacity, pushing designers toward multi-die packages, chiplets, and rack-scale systems (EE Times). Port-bundling is the catch-up move that lets open standards compete on the bandwidth that proprietary fabrics like NVLink have used to lead.
The tooling is here. The racks are not, and the proprietary-versus-standard race is not over.
